We're delighted to welcome writer, journalist and musician Stephanie Phillips to Manningtree Arts, in conversation about her brilliant new book, We Were Here: A History of Black People and Alternative Music.
From Jimi Hendrix to Bad Brains to Living Colour, Black artists have always been at the heart of rock, punk, indie and alternative music — yet their contributions have too often been written out of the story. We Were Here sets the record straight, tracing this hidden history from the 1930s to today, and weaving in Phillips's own experience as a Black woman coming up in the punk scene, as singer and guitarist of Big Joanie.
